Cell Culture Technician

The Stowers Institute has an opening for a Cell Culture Technician.  This position will include weekend work.

Responsibilities include maintaining mammalian and insect cell lines; expanding cell lines to meet researchers requirements; cultivating cells on plates or in flasks, and in roller bottles and/or spinner flasks for larger-scale (10-100 liter) cultures; Participating in the scheduling and delivery of all cell lines as requested; preparing and maintaining cell bank and managing storage database as required; quality control assays such as sterility, endotoxin, mycoplasma testing, and others as needed; evaluating newly introduced cell lines for mycoplasma and other contamination, and for release from quarantine as needed; conducting routine and specialized assays as needed; preparing media, nutrient feeds, buffers, and reagents for cell culture and analytical work; setting up and maintaining equipment and instruments.

Additional responsibilities include set up and maintenance of equipment and instruments; keeping accurate record of observations in a lab notebook; maintaining a clean and organized work area; ordering raw materials; maintaining inventory; assisting in the writing and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures; and performing daily duties with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will have mastered a broad spectrum of basic and advanced laboratory techniques in Molecular and Cell Biology and will have excellent sterile technique, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences or equivalent, 3+ years practical experience, and demonstrated working knowledge of Molecular and Cell Biology and related techniques.
 

Head of Computational Biology 

The Stowers Institute has an opening for the Head of its Computational Biology core facility. The Computational Biology group provides bioinformatics support for the laboratories of the Institute’s 22 principal investigators. The support provided by the group includes service, training, collaborations and the development of new applications in the areas of sequence analysis, expression/ChIP analysis, general statistical and numerical analysis and support for scientific software and databases. The group works closely with a 16-person Information Technology team and Ph.D.-level research advisors with expertise in microarrays, imaging, and mathematical modeling. The Computational Biology group currently includes seven analysts and is expected to grow in size because of the Institute’s increasing needs in this area. The Institute’s endowment serves as the principal source of funding for the group.

The Head of Computational Biology will report to the Vice President of Core Facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the overall activities of the group and serving as the key point of contact for major projects. The ideal candidate will have a sufficient knowledge of biology to understand and discuss the research questions of a diverse group of investigators, sufficient knowledge of bioinformatics to assess the feasibility of different computational approaches, significant supervisory experience and superlative communications skills. The job is not expected to require significant travel.

The position requires an advanced degree in the life sciences and significant experience leading collaborations between biologists and computer scientists. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience with bioinformatics approaches and at least five years of supervisory experience.

Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate within a molecular and developmental neurobiology group.

The individual will participate in research in one or more of the following areas: identification of neural circuitry involved in specific behavioral tasks, the molecular mechanism of circuit specification and the development and plasticity of neural circuitry. The lab employs a combination of methodologies including molecular genetics, modern imaging techniques, electrophysiology and behavioral assays. Stowers Institute Postdoctoral Research Associates enjoy intramural research support from core facilities that provide advice, training and service to enhance the Institute’s interdisciplinary and collaborative research programs. Current core facilities are staffed by over 100 scientists with expertise in bioinformatics, cytometry, histology, imaging, microarray, next generation sequencing, transgenic and ES cell technologies, proteomics and molecular biology.

Qualified candidates are expected to be recent recipients of a doctoral degree in the life sciences, chemistry or biomedical engineering. Candidates with experience in one or more of the following fields are encouraged to apply: molecular biology, molecular neuroscience, genetics, immunology, electrophysiology and imaging.

Research Technician II

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician II in the LASF to support services provided by the Transgenic and Reproductive Technologies Group.

Responsibilities include culture, expansion and long term storage of mouse Embryonic Stem cell lines and mouse embryonic fibroblast lines; electroporation and selection of DNA targeted Embryonic Stem cells; cryopreservation of murine lines by embryo, sperm and/ or ovary freezing; In Vitro Fertilization; and maintenance of records and databases.

In addition to excellent communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work in a team –oriented environment, the successful candidate will have a general knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and experimental techniques. A minimum of two years’ experience is desired in one or more of the following areas- general tissue culture with embryonic stem cell culture; cryopreservation; or In Vitro Fertilization.

Minimum requirements include an undergraduate degree in biology, or a related field; a general knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and associated laboratory techniques; and experience in handling small animals.

Research Technician II

A Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Early Career Scientist at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for an advanced level Technician to carry out a broad range of experimental techniques in a research laboratory focusing on the molecular basis of chromosome end protection and telomere length regulation.

Responsibilities include working closely with other lab members to design and perform experiments; independently performing experiments, analyzing data, and troubleshooting problems; use modern techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, tissue culture, and microscopy to solve problems in biomedical  science; and effectively initiating and composing correspondence to communicate various purposes in an appropriate style.  Responsibilities may also include evaluating new techniques and technology; developing laboratory guidelines, maintaining procedures manuals, and/or evaluating new materials and equipment; and training incoming personnel in proper lab conduct and experimental procedures.

In addition to outstanding communication skills and the ability to efficiently function in a team-oriented environment, the successful candidate will have proven ability to organize, multi-task, and keep impeccable records of research activities; and will be willing and able to explore areas and seek opportunities to apply new knowledge to work.

Scientific Advocate

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a part-time Scientific Advocate who will use scientific knowledge to effectively assist researchers with completion of IACUC protocols and IBC registrations. 

Responsibilities include assisting scientific researchers in preparations and analysis of required submissions throughout the approval processes; collaborating with Research Regulations and EH&S on behalf of scientific researchers to prepare submission summary statements for presentation at IACUC and IBC meetings; assisting scientific researchers with congruency of IACUC protocols, IBC registrations, grants documentation, and scientific publications, as applicable; performing IACUC and IBC scientific publication reviews in LIMS; and performing other duties as assigned by the Scientific Director.

In addition to outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment, the successful candidate will have the ability to develop and maintain working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization; will possess creative problem solving skills, a demonstrated record of providing excellent service and engaging in collaborative relationships; and the ability to understand scientific goals, experimental design, experimental approaches, and the relevant regulatory requirements.

The Stowers Institute is currently seeking two Undergraduate Researchers to assist in the Aquatics Facility from June through August, 2012. 

Job duties include care of aquatic organisms (Zebrafish, anemones, and flatworms) involving: preparing diets; feeding and health monitoring; cleaning and disinfection of tanks, rooms, and equipment; egg collection; water quality monitoring; record keeping; and assisting Facility members in daily duties.

Applicants should be working toward an undergraduate degree in science and have an interest in laboratory animal science. The successful candidates will be self-motivated, have excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with other team members. Prior experience with aquatic organisms is preferred.
